1992 started solidly for Kevin, only to be interrupted by injury in the third race.  After that he race-crashed three more times, the first being the extraordinary T-boneing by Eddie Lawson at Assen.  The second crash was attributable to weakness through resultant injuries - he came back extraordinarily quickly,- and the third was on spilled oil or coolant.

Some thought his new approach meant that he was already past his best, and he added only one victory to his previous total of 18.  But it was a typically swashbuckling ride at Mugello which proved he still had his old race-winning ability as well as the new-found consistency that, with a bit more good luck, might have brought him his first long-awaited World Championship.
