| 1988 was a
watershed year for Kevin Schwantz. He started by winning the Daytona
Superbike race with a broken arm. Then came Grand Prix racing.
His first full season of riding Grand Prix gave him and Suzuki two victories, The Grand Prix of Japan in Suzuka, and the Grand Prix of Germany at the Nurburgring. An impressive 8th place finish in the championship points had shown to the world that Schwantz was no fluke.

The signing of Pepsi as full
sponsor of the Suzuki factory team, along with the FIM signing a
multi year television contract, propelled the sport of Grand Prix
Motorcycle racing as a blue ribbon sport. |
'Schwantz is an added plus. He is a natural spokesperson, he has a great personality, he is very receptive, not moody - relatively. He gets excited about being a spokesperson. He takes it as part of the job rather than a pain in the arse and something to do your best to get out of, so the guy is a rare find.' Mike de Noma, Marketing Director-Pepsi Cola Mediterranean Operations. |
